A Group of Impensive Readers
If you’re a reader that’s always pressed for time. . . .
. . . you’re not alone.
It’s no secret how hard it is to make time everything that’s important when there’s always so much to do. it takes a whole of time and effort to lead a modern life, and it’s only too easy to feel that you’re running behind, and its only too easy to start feeling guilty about activities that give you pleasure, by turning them into another task that eats into your daily life.
And book clubs are a fine idea, but the number of people who ever gravitated to homework in their lives only becomes progressively small the longer you live. (Take it from someone who knows.)
Whether you’re reading for pleasure, or exercise your mind in ways you don’t have time or space set aside for, that’s where we come in. It’s worth giving something more manageable a try that’s not a stack of unread books on the bedside table. Join me once a week, and become an Impensive Reader.
The idea behind an Impensive group is realatively simple, but the simplest ideas quickly become the hardest when you don’t know where to start. Joing a weekly group of a readers group, meaning that it puts reading front and centre. There’s no homework, and no reading list. All you need to bring is yourself, and set two hours aside to read and then discuss two short pieces of writing that can be digested in less than an hour.
Thenm we discuss what we’ve read as a group, knowing that everyone is on the same page—so to speak. I have over 10 years of expereince teaching at the post secondary level, and as well as a published writer and poet. Reading is my bread and butter, and more than anythign I like to demystify the what’s strange and wonderful about words.

An small, online group of readers who want to be exposed to short poems & stories from beyond the beaten track. There will be two pieces introduced to read and discuss as a moderated group. Each sessions is capped at 8 participants. In terms of participation, sessions can be as lively or as subdued as the participants are interestedi nbeing in the discussion is highly encouraged, but not mandatory. (In the event of prolonged dead air, I will conduct the group more akin to a literary seminar, meaning I’ll do most of the talking, but will need a bit of input on where to steer the material in a direction that matches the interest of the group.;)
-

Stories short enough to read in under an hour, but with enough meat on their bones to really give the group something to think and talk about.
Short stories get neglected an awful lot—this is a good chance to get exposed to some writers who are especially gifted when it comes to keep it short & sweet (and maybe a little bit devestating, as well.)

There are many excellent writer instuctors, editors, and coaches out there to help a writer polish their craft—but there aren’t many who focus on what it means to read a poem, and respond to it in the critical language of a professional writer or academic.
The Poets’ Seminar is a condensed version of the kind of seminar a writer would encounter during an MFA, with the focus placed on reading before writing. The seminar will be deliberately small, and scheduled over the 7 weeks, with a one week break scheduled in the middle.
The seminar is for poets, specifically poets who have been writing joining enrolling in the seminar. A sample will be neccessary to participate, and there will be two, short writing assignments to complete over spaced out over the six weeks that the seminar meets.

Made for Everyday UseWhat does it mean to be impensive?
It’s a valid question, and the answer is I don’t entirely know. It’s a portmanteau—a smashing together of two seperate words that kept emerging at a time where I felt restless, worried, and too full of demanding thoughts; its seemed like a feeling a deserved a name all to itself, a few months later, impensive won out in the end.
