ImpensiveReaders
A different sort of meeting between literary minds
For those readers who are never short on will,
but nearly always short on time.
THE CONCEPT
PHILOSOPHY OR WHATEVER
An issue that comes up again and again with regards to book clubs and reading circles is …
ImpensiveReaders groups put the emphasis on reading as a real-time activity, an opportunity to practice, learn, or flex the ability to converse about and around literature. Get exposed. Expand horizons. Puncture the exclusivity, and have fun.
No preparation. No homework. Just an open mind, and a little more than two hours to put aside in a quiet corner of your own home. Robert supplies the text, reading time is collective, and after a short break, an open discussion, moderated (and filling silences) by your host Robert, and which point you can take off the thinking caps, and consider joining the group again the following week if you find its a good way to spend a thrursday evening—but with no obligation to do so.
No AI summaries. No searching for something thought provoking but readable in one sitting. Just gathering with some like minded readers, and an opportunity to take a breath and discusses what makes can still make words worth talking about, rather than a chore.
GROUPS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF
Impensive READERS
WHAT THE GROUPS HAVE IN COMMON
Each group has some essentail features in common. Small attendance. A focus on what can be achieved in the time allotted, with a foucs on meeting the needs of the group in attendence, rather than meeting aperscribed agenda. Reading time included, and reading material supplied at the beginning of the session, with ample time to read the material, but also give it some thought before taking a short break, and then diving in with the group to generate a discussion moderated by your host, Robert—who will offer prompts and ideas to keep the discussion moving, and generating ideas. (And in the event of prolonged dead air, he can put his prefessorial hat on, and talk the group through some of the ways literary work is apprached in an academic seminar—with a focus on demystifying the approach, and maybe poking a little fun at how exclusive the academy can imply discussiing literautre should be.)
Where the groups differ regard the material chosen to focus on, and how long each group will run (at least initially). The Queer Impensive Readers is a group designed with poetnially more heads, but a more accessible price point. Later in the season two groups of limited size will be dovoted to poetry and fiction exclusively, but run for a limited number of weeks.
In early 2027, a Poets Seminar is in the works. A miniture but more accessible version of an graduate creative writing seminar, that follows the philosophy of the IpensiveReaders groups, but will require a seven week committment, as well as a writing component, for poets who are already producing work and are intereted in developing the skills involved with discussing and critiquing one anothers work, with an emphasis on building a communtiy and inspiring the work you will be doing in the future.

What exactly is
Impensive?
Impensive is a portmanteau (two words, smashed together for the sake of producing a combinatory meaning) that Robert started doodling in the margins rather than writing more useful annotations. It takes “impatient” and “pensive,” and captures something he’s often felt but been at a loss to describe: a restless impatience to do more with what’s preoccupying his thoughts, but a lacking clearly defined ways to direct surplus attention.
It occured to him that this isn’t a feeling unique to his own experience, and has wanted to find a way to put the word to use ever since he decided it was a perfectly cromulent word, and has put it to work as a way to encapsualte what he would like provide a little relief to by creating groups to centre on readers and reading skills, rather than clubs that assume everyone who wants to get around to meeting and discussing creative works have the extra time and motivation to keep up with commitments that are meant to be a pleasure, rathan than an addtional thing to stess about or develop a feeling of falling behind.
